Consulting & Strategy Support

Supporting Organizations That Care for Families

Dr. Jodi Cunningham partners with organizations, healthcare systems, nonprofits, schools, and community-based initiatives working to better support women, children, and families. Her work sits at the intersection of maternal health, public health, community leadership, education, and systems design, helping organizations bridge the gap between policy, research, and what families actually experience in real life.

With experience spanning direct birth and postpartum support, academic teaching, public health leadership, program development, housing and health initiatives, and community-based maternal health work, Dr. Jodi brings both systems-level insight and deeply human understanding to every partnership.

Family-Centered Organizational Support

Helping organizations better support the people they serve through maternal health strategy, workforce support, community partnerships, program development, grant writing, and family-centered initiatives.

The benefits of investing in family support are clear. Companies that offer comprehensive workplace lactation and parental support see employee retention rates soar, up to 94%, compared with the national average of 59%, translating into major cost savings.

Supporting breastfeeding and maternal health also reduces absenteeism, as infants experience fewer illnesses and parents can stay at work with greater peace of mind.

Rooted in Relationships

Consulting support is collaborative, thoughtful, and tailored to the goals of each organization. Rather than offering disconnected recommendations, Dr. Jodi focuses on helping organizations create meaningful, sustainable changes that improve both experience and outcomes for the people they serve.

This work acknowledges that many systems were not built with families at the center. Through strategy, education, relationship-building, and innovation, the goal is to help organizations move toward care models that feel more connected, accessible, responsive, and human.

A Different Kind of Perspective

What makes Dr. Jodi’s work unique is the ability to hold both direct family experience and systems-level strategy at the same time.

She understands what families are navigating inside hospitals, workplaces, schools, housing systems, and community organizations because she has worked both alongside families and within the systems themselves. Her approach blends evidence, lived experience, relationship-building, and implementation strategy in ways that feel practical, collaborative, and deeply grounded in real life.

Meet the Founders

At the heart of BWS Doulas are co-founders April Kline and Dr. Jodi Cunningham, two women deeply committed to walking alongside families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum with expertise, compassion, and unwavering support.

Together, they bring decades of combined experience, from midwifery and lactation consulting to childbirth education, public health, and academic research. April’s background as a Certified Professional Midwife and IBCLC blends hands-on care with holistic healing practices, while Jodi’s work as an Evidence Based Birth® instructor, birth doula, and health educator makes complex information accessible and empowering for families.

What unites them is a shared vision: to create a doula agency and resource hub that treats every parent as a whole person, not a checklist. Their leadership ensures that every BWS doula is trained to provide nuanced, personalized, and evidence-based support that reflects the heart of their mission: helping families feel prepared, cared for, and confident in their journey into parenthood.

They were very communicative when I first reached out about overnight doula services and found a good match for us, Morgan. She was very helpful for those couple of weeks we used her so we could get some extra rest!

Michelle Hamilton

So thankful for this organization to introduce us to Morgan! Morgan provided my husband and I with so much support through the pregnancy and even after with lactation and postpartum healing.

Emma Taylor

Courtney Gradel was my Doula for my first birth. I wanted to do a natural and unmedicated birth and she gave me all the tools to make sure that happened. Having her there ensured my birth plan was respected, and that my labor progressed in a positive way. I am SO glad I hired her!!
